What a Heineken costs 150 km apart

Two price lists, one border

TASMAC's MRP is fixed statewide by law — it's the number this app is built on. The Puducherry Excise Department publishes exactly the same thing for its own shops. Because both lists carry the product name and the bottle size, the two can be joined like database tables. We kept only the strict matches: identical identifying words, equal ml, same grade — 228 bottles survived. A fuzzy match would have been bigger and wrong; a mismatched pair doesn't fail loudly, it just invents a bargain.

Divide one price by the other and every bottle gets a single number: the multiple. ₹310 ÷ ₹105 = 2.95× — that's the Heineken. The median across all 228 is 1.27×: the typical bottle costs about a quarter more in Tamil Nadu than in Puducherry. That's the duty structure doing what duty structures do. The interesting part is everything that isn't typical.

Beer travels worst

Ranked by category median, beer is the clear loser at 1.42× — and it owns the single worst number on the board, the 2.95× Heineken. SNJ 10000 Super Strong, a beer brewed in Tamil Nadu, is 2.27× its Pondy price. Brandy follows at 1.36×, dragged up by the everyday locals: McDowell's VSOP is 2.22× across all three sizes — the ₹200 Quarter here is a ₹90 bottle there.

Notice the shape: the cheaper the bottle, the harder the border hits it. Excise duty isn't a percentage of the price — much of it lands per bottle and per proof-litre, so a flat few-dozen rupees is invisible on a ₹8,000 cognac and doubles a ₹105 beer. Of the 14 bottles at 2× or worse, almost all sit at the affordable end of the list.

The fifteen that go the other way

Here is the part nobody guesses in the queue: 15 of the 228 are cheaper in Tamil Nadu — and the list reads like a duty-free shelf. Meukow VS cognac is ₹5,450 here against ₹8,010 there (0.68×). Rémy Martin VSOP: ₹8,040 vs ₹11,234. Godet VSOP, Johnnie Walker 18, Bacardí Ocho, Woodford Reserve, a shelf of Two Oceans and Bush Ballad wines — all of them cost less at a TASMAC counter than in Puducherry.

So the folk wisdom — "everything is cheaper in Pondy" — is three-quarters true and precisely backwards at the top shelf. The trip pays on beer and the everyday brandies; on a serious cognac it costs you money and the fuel.

Is the drive ever worth it?

Do the arithmetic the way the app does it for bottle sizes. A Chennai–Puducherry round trip is roughly 300 km — call it ₹1,500–2,000 in fuel or a bus ticket and a day of your life. On the median 1.27× bottle you'd need to haul several cases before the trip breaks even — and hauling cases across that border without a permit is precisely what the excise checkposts on the ECR exist to catch. The gap is a fact about duty structures, not a shopping strategy. Where it actually earns its keep is the other direction: knowing whether a TASMAC price is steep or fair for what it is. A 1.17× wine is priced honestly for this side of the border. A 2.95× beer is simply what a monopoly plus a duty wall does to imported lager.

From this week, the app prints the Puducherry price directly under the ₹/L line for every one of the 228 matched bottles — "₹360 in Puducherry · 2.22× here" — in green on the fifteen where Tamil Nadu wins. No editorial, no adjectives, just the other government's number next to ours. The figures in this post are from the Puducherry Excise MRP list dated 10 June 2026 joined to the TASMAC catalogue as of 1 September 2026; both lists get revised, and the app's copy updates when they do — a blog post doesn't. The pairing method comes from the open-source tasmac-mcp project, used with attribution and re-verified against our own catalogue: 228 pairs, zero price disagreements.
