TASMAC timings: 12 noon to 10 pm — and the questions the clock doesn’t answer
Every TASMAC shop in Tamil Nadu opens at 12 noon and closes at 10 pm. Same in Chennai, same in Coimbatore, same in a single-room shop in Nilgiris. That is the whole answer, and it has not changed in years. What people are actually asking, underneath the search box, is one of three other questions — is it open today, is there anywhere open later, and will the bottle still be there when I arrive.
The hours, plainly
TASMAC retail shops trade from 12 noon to 10 pm, seven days a week. The bars attached to them keep the same hours. These are the pre-COVID timings, restored after the pandemic closures, and they apply uniformly across all 38 districts — the state sets one window and every outlet works to it.
There is no weekday-versus-weekend split, no separate Sunday schedule, and no district that opens earlier. If you have read that shops in some areas start at 2 pm, that is a local exception people report rather than a published rule; the stated statewide opening is noon.
“Have TASMAC timings changed?”
This question resurfaces every few months, usually after a headline about a proposal. The answer has been the same each time: no.
In July 2023 the Prohibition and Excise Minister publicly shut down exactly this rumour, saying his earlier remarks had been misread and that “the timing of the shops will not be changed and the shops will function between 12 noon and 10 pm.” Three years later the window is still 12 to 10, and the most recent official restatement of it came not from TASMAC but from the police.
Why your friend got a drink at 11 pm
Because he wasn’t in a TASMAC shop. Tamil Nadu licenses liquor under different categories, and they close at different times — which is the single most common source of confusion about “TASMAC timings”.
On 17 May 2026 the Chennai Police Commissioner issued a set of law-and-order directions to every station in the city that spelled the categories out:

So the later drink is real, but it is an FL3 bar, not a shop, and it is served at bar prices rather than the law-fixed MRP you pay at a counter. The same directive also banned “loose selling” outright.
There is no 24-hour TASMAC. Anywhere.
Search “24 hours liquor Chennai” and you will find listicles promising round-the-clock stores. They are describing something real and something illegal at the same time. Liquor is available after 10 pm in some places. It is not available lawfully, from any FL1 outlet, at any hour of any night, in any district of Tamil Nadu.
That after-hours trade is precisely what the May 2026 police directive told stations to stamp out, along with loose selling. A shop still serving at 11 pm is not a shop with special permission. It is a shop breaking the rule that binds all 4,852 of them.
The eight days the clock is irrelevant
Opening hours only matter on days the shutters go up at all. Tamil Nadu had eight dry days in 2026 — four that repeat every year (Republic Day, May Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti) and four that were declared, including the election polling and counting days in April and May. The last one left this year is Gandhi Jayanti, 2 October.
A dry day is total: not reduced hours, not restricted brands. Every shop in the state stays shut. We can see it in the count — on 15 August our shelf counts recorded zero bottles moving statewide, and on 26 August they did the same. The second one we flagged from the data before we knew why; it turned out to be Eid Milad, declared dry. A dry day cannot hide from a shelf count.

Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem — same clock
People search the timings city by city, so it is worth saying flatly: the hours do not vary by city. What varies is which shop is near you, whether it is one of the 199 Elite outlets, and what is actually on the shelf when you get there.
Open is not the same as stocked
This is the part the clock will never tell you, and the reason “what time does TASMAC close” is usually the wrong question. A shop can be open, well-lit and staffed at half past nine and still not have the bottle you walked there for.
Demand is not spread evenly either. Counted across the state, the week runs remarkably flat from Monday to Saturday — and then Sunday erupts to about 1.12 crore bottles, 36% above an average Friday. Friday night being the big night is folklore; the numbers say Sunday, every week. The day before a dry day behaves like an artificial Sunday for the same reason.

What time does TASMAC close?
10 pm. FL1 outlets — ordinary TASMAC shops and Elite shops alike — and FL2 outlets must shut by 10 pm. FL3 establishments, which are hotel and club bars rather than TASMAC shops, run to midnight.
Is TASMAC open today?
Yes, unless today is a dry day. Tamil Nadu had eight dry days in 2026 — four that repeat every year and four declared. The last one this year is Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October.
Is TASMAC open on Sunday?
Yes. Sunday is a normal trading day and by our count it is the busiest one — the state buys about 1.12 crore bottles on an average Sunday, 36% more than on an average Friday.
Are there 24-hour TASMAC shops?
No. There is no legal 24-hour or round-the-clock TASMAC outlet anywhere in Tamil Nadu. Every FL1 shop shuts at 10 pm. Listings of “24 hours liquor stores in Chennai” describe after-hours selling that is not authorised, which is exactly what the Chennai Police Commissioner’s May 2026 directive told stations to stop.
Have TASMAC timings changed?
No. The 12 noon to 10 pm window is the pre-COVID timing, restored after the pandemic and repeatedly reaffirmed since — by the Prohibition and Excise Minister in 2023 and by the Chennai Police Commissioner’s directive of 17 May 2026.
Are TASMAC timings different in Chennai, Coimbatore or Madurai?
No. The hours are set statewide and are identical in every district. What differs between cities is which shop is near you and what is actually on its shelf, not the clock.
