What Tamil Nadu actually drinks
We count stock movement across every TASMAC shop in Tamil Nadu, several times a day. Two weeks of it produced one number we keep coming back to: brandy is sixty-nine per cent of every bottle that leaves a shelf in this state.
The category split is not close
Most states have a spirit that leads. Tamil Nadu has one that dominates to the point of near-monopoly. Across 13 consecutive trading days and 3,956 reporting shops, this is every bottle we saw move, by category.
Brandy, beer and rum together are 94.4% of the market. Whisky — the category that dominates most of India — is 0.6% here. Wine is a rounding error.
Nine of the ten best-sellers are brandy
Zoom from categories to individual products and it gets starker. Of the ten best-selling products in Tamil Nadu, nine are brandy. The only interruption is a beer, at number two.

Mc Lene Original Brandy (#7, 16.4M bottles) is not pictured — we do not have a studio photograph of it yet.
Old Chef Deluxe Brandy alone accounts for roughly 39.8 million bottles over the 13 days we measured — more than half again the next product on the list. That runner-up, Kingfisher Magnum Strong Beer at 25.2 million, is the biggest non-brandy product in Tamil Nadu and the only thing interrupting an otherwise unbroken run. Behind them, Monitor Deluxe, Vorion No.1, Jet, Imperials Express, Mc Lene Original, Black Pearl and Diamond are all brandy, all bunched within a fairly tight band of one another.
These are not premium bottles. They are the everyday Tamil Nadu house brands, mostly in the ₹100–₹250 range for a Quarter, and they are what the state runs on.
The part that should worry a buyer: the catalogue is stocked for a different state
Here is the finding we did not go looking for. TASMAC lists 1,498 products. Set what is listed against what is bought, and the two barely resemble each other.
| Category | Share of catalogue | Share of bottles sold | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wine · 456 products | 30.4% | 0.3% | Over-listed ~100× |
| Whisky · 273 products | 18.2% | 0.6% | Over-listed ~30× |
| Brandy · 249 products | 16.6% | 69.0% | Under-listed ~4× |
| Beer · 199 products | 13.3% | 13.7% | About right |
| Rum · 71 products | 4.7% | 11.7% | Under-listed ~2.5× |
| Vodka · 117 products | 7.8% | 4.6% | Slightly over-listed |
| Gin · 39 products | 2.6% | 0.01% | Over-listed ~250× |
Nearly a third of the catalogue is wine that essentially nobody buys, while brandy — two thirds of actual demand — gets a sixth of the listings. Beer is the only category where shelf space and appetite genuinely agree.
There are decent reasons for some of this. Wine and whisky ranges carry many more distinct labels per unit of demand, imported lines exist to be available rather than to sell in volume, and a catalogue is not a shelf — a listed product need not be stocked everywhere. But a gap of a hundred to one is not explained by cataloguing convention. It is a market whose paperwork describes a different set of drinkers than the ones in the queue.
What this means if you are the one in the queue
Practically: the products you are most likely to want are the ones most likely to be sold out, because demand is concentrated into a handful of lines. Statewide, brandy shortages are the ones that bite. If your usual is one of the eight above, stock depth is worth checking before you walk — the app shows plenty, low, or last few per shop, refreshed through the day.
A note on these numbers
These are estimates from stock movement, not sales receipts. We count what disappears from shelves across 3,956 reporting shops and infer sales from it — we count what leaves the shelves across every reporting shop and infer sales from it. We have deliberately used a 13-day window (16–29 August 2026) with consistent shop coverage and excluded dry days, rather than quoting a bigger number over a period where our coverage changed. Percentages are of bottles, not revenue; a brandy Quarter and a beer bottle count the same here, so the revenue picture would look different again.
Tamil Nadu is a brandy state. Everything else is a rounding error with a long catalogue.
