TASMAC on Pongal 2027: the one day it shuts, and what Pongal sells
Thai Pongal 2027 is Friday 15 January. TASMAC is open on Bhogi and on Pongal day, 12 noon to 10 pm, and shut the day after, Thiruvalluvar Day: the only "Pongal leave" the shops get. Here are the dates, the January dry days, and what Pongal has sold.

The dates are the almanac's: Sankranti falls at 9:14 pm on 14 January, so Thai Pongal is Friday 15 January, with Bhogi the day before, Mattu Pongal the day after and Kaanum Pongal last.
One caution on the 16th. Tamil Nadu had not published its 2027 holiday list when this was written; the 2026 list came in November 2025. Some calendar sites print Thiruvalluvar Day 2027 on 15 January, the same day as Pongal. In every year we checked it was the day after: 16 January 2019, 15 January 2025, 16 January 2026. We have followed that pattern and marked it "expected". Thai Poosam is 22 January by the almanac; two calendar sites print the 23rd.
Is TASMAC open on Pongal?
Yes, on Bhogi and on Pongal day. The closure is the day after. Rule 12 of the state's retail rules says a shop "shall remain closed on Thiruvalluvar Day falling in January", as on Vallalar Memorial Day and three other named days, and on any day the government or a Collector orders.
The notice arrives close to the date. In 2026 it was reported on 10 January: every shop and bar shut on 16 January (Thiruvalluvar Day), 26 January (Republic Day) and 1 February (Vallalar Memorial Day, kept on Thai Poosam).
Timings. We found no report of a Pongal change to the hours. Shops keep 12 noon to 10 pm, and a dry day is a full closure, not a shorter day. The whole calendar is on the dry days page.
What Pongal sold
Reports cover two days in one year and four or five in another, so each figure is shown with its days. We found none for 2023; the 2024 figure is the one quoted a year later.

Pongal day outsells Bhogi in every report: by 56% in 2022, 45% in 2025 and 39% in 2026. It is the festival day, and also the last trading day before a dry day. In 2019, the one year with all five days, Kaanum Pongal came second at ₹150 crore.
What our counts can and cannot say
Our counts begin in August 2026, so we have no Pongal data of our own. What we have is the day before a dry day, and the day after.
January 2027 puts both in one weekend. Friday 15 January is Pongal day and the eve of the expected dry day. Sunday 17 January is Kaanum Pongal and the day the shops reopen. We are not putting a number on either. Both records point the same way: the day before a closure runs well above an ordinary day, and so does the day after.

Buy for the 16th on the 15th. 10 pm on Pongal day is the last sale before the closure.
