Four dry days in Chengalpattu: the stock-up, the zero, and the shops across the border
For the Madurantakam by-election, the Chengalpattu Collector shut every TASMAC shop in the district from Saturday 4 October to polling day on Monday 6 October, with one more closure on Thursday 9 October when the votes are counted. We count every shelf in Tamil Nadu through the day, so this is what a three-day district closure looks like in bottles: a record Saturday before it, three days of nothing, and a line of shops just across the district border selling double.
The order
The by-election for the Madurantakam (SC) assembly seat was held on Monday 6 October 2026, with counting on Friday 9 October. On 3 October the press reported the District Collector's order: all TASMAC shops and bars in Chengalpattu district to stay shut from the 4th to the 6th, and again on the 9th. The order covered the whole district, not only the constituency, so Tambaram, Pallavaram and the OMR stretch inside Chengalpattu closed along with Madurantakam itself. Tiruppur district had the same closure for the Dharapuram by-election, held the same day.
Saturday: the biggest day the district has had
People knew. On Saturday 3 October, the last trading day before the closure, Chengalpattu's shops sold an estimated 730,869 bottles, worth about ₹12.3 crore at MRP. The Saturday before, it was 454,827 bottles and ₹7.9 crore. That is a 61% rise, and the biggest day in the district since we began counting in August, ahead even of 1 October, the night before Gandhi Jayanti.
The stock-up was strongest furthest from Chennai, where the nearest open shop on Sunday would be an hour away:
| Taluk | Sat 26 Sep | Sat 3 Oct | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cheyyur | 15,484 | 35,195 | +127% |
| Thirukkalukundram | 40,479 | 84,479 | +109% |
| Madurantakam | 58,212 | 105,838 | +82% |
| Thirupporur | 60,951 | 99,929 | +64% |
| Chengalpattu | 88,518 | 141,222 | +60% |
| Tambaram | 127,324 | 177,713 | +40% |
| Pallavaram | 53,040 | 72,718 | +37% |
| Vandalur | 10,819 | 13,775 | +27% |
Tambaram and Pallavaram, whose residents can reach a Chennai shop in minutes, rose least. What people bought was what they always buy, only more of it. Jet Brandy went from about 25,000 bottles the previous Saturday to about 86,000, more than three times; Black Pearl from 47,000 to 81,000; McLene from 26,000 to 61,000. The busiest single shop that day was #4380 at Vazhalur, Thirukkalukundram, at roughly double its usual Saturday. Tiruppur, facing its own closure, did the same: its Saturday doubled, from 369,000 bottles to 739,000.
Three days of nothing
From Sunday to Tuesday the district's 113 open shops recorded no sales at all. On the same three weekdays a week earlier they had sold an estimated 1,379,159 bottles, worth about ₹23.3 crore. That is the size of the hole: roughly what the whole of Kancheepuram district sells in a week.
The app noticed before anyone told it. When a district's counts show no movement after opening time, Pulse marks the night as a closure rather than a quiet one, which is why Chengalpattu's 4 October read "Dry day — every shop shut, the count pauses" on Sunday evening. The Collector's order had not reached the dry-day calendar; the shelves had.
The shops across the line
Chengalpattu district wraps around the south and south-west of Chennai, and the district line runs through built-up suburbs: Pallikaranai sits on one side, Medavakkam on the other. We took every shop outside the district within 3 km of a Chengalpattu shop, 115 of them (110 in Chennai, 4 in Kancheepuram, 1 in Tiruvallur), and compared Sunday–Tuesday of the closure with the same days a week earlier.
| Shops | Sun–Tue, 27–29 Sep | Sun–Tue, 4–6 Oct | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 115 border shops (within 3 km of Chengalpattu) | 11,14,073 | 13,32,150 | +20% |
| Rest of Chennai district (195 shops) | 19,20,989 | 20,23,335 | +5% |
| Rest of Kancheepuram district | 5,96,856 | 6,99,496 | +17% |
| Rest of Tiruvallur district | 13,02,390 | 12,97,233 | 0% |
The pattern is exactly what a map would predict. Tiruvallur, to Chennai's north and nowhere near Chengalpattu, did not move. Kancheepuram, which shares a long border with Chengalpattu to the west, rose across the district. In Chennai the rise was concentrated in the taluks that touch the line:
| Taluk | Border shops | 27–29 Sep | 4–6 Oct | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sholinganallur, Chennai | 14 | 1,27,113 | 2,56,223 | +102% |
| Kundrathur, Kancheepuram | 3 | 29,791 | 62,959 | +111% |
| Alandur, Chennai | 6 | 42,653 | 72,280 | +69% |
| Mambalam, Chennai | 7 | 58,305 | 66,326 | +14% |
| Guindy, Chennai | 10 | 1,03,095 | 1,09,908 | +7% |
| Egmore, Aminjikarai, Ambattur | 52 | 4,66,632 | 4,77,420 | +2% |
Sholinganallur taluk, the strip of Chennai between Velachery and the OMR, doubled. Its shops are a short drive from Medavakkam, Tambaram and the OMR townships that had gone dry. Shop by shop:
| Shop | Where | From the line | 27–29 Sep | 4–6 Oct |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #4308 | Ram Nagar South, Sholinganallur | 0.8 km | 8,780 | 24,034 (×2.7) |
| #4359 | Velachery Main Road, Pallikaranai | 1.3 km | 8,262 | 22,095 (×2.7) |
| #4154 | Velachery Main Road, Pallikaranai | 1.1 km | 8,392 | 21,159 (×2.5) |
| #4372 | Medavakkam Main Road | 1.4 km | 9,115 | 22,164 (×2.4) |
| #4600 | Thirumudivakkam, Kundrathur | 2.5 km | 11,996 | 27,111 (×2.3) |
| #4168 | OMR, Sholinganallur | 3.0 km | 15,185 | 33,531 (×2.2) |
| #4093 | Station Road, Palavanthangal | 1.2 km | 12,736 | 23,910 (×1.9) |
Where the 13.8 lakh bottles went
Add it up against the same days a week earlier. The Saturday stock-up was about 2.8 lakh bottles over a normal Saturday. The 115 border shops sold 2.2 lakh more than usual, the rest of Chennai 1 lakh more, the rest of Kancheepuram 1 lakh more. That accounts for roughly 7 lakh of the 13.8 lakh that would have sold in Chengalpattu: about half. The other half, worth something like ₹11 crore at MRP, was not bought from TASMAC in those three days. Whether it was skipped, bought earlier than our comparison can see, or bought somewhere our counts cannot, the shelves do not say.
Statewide, with Chengalpattu and Tiruppur both shut, Tamil Nadu sold 2.52 crore bottles over the three days against 2.74 crore the week before: 8% fewer, with the two districts' neighbours making up part of the gap.
Thursday 9 October, and after
The district shuts once more on counting day, 9 October, under the same order; so does Tiruppur. If the pattern holds, Wednesday 8 October will be a heavy day in Chengalpattu and the border shops will be busy again on Thursday. Shops reopen on their usual hours, 12 noon to 10 pm, on 10 October.
Every shop's live count is on the Chengalpattu district page and in the app, which shows the nearest shop that has your bottle, whichever side of the line it is on.
Common questions
Is TASMAC open in Chengalpattu district today?
Shops were shut on 4, 5 and 6 October 2026 and are shut again on 9 October, the day the votes are counted. On other days they trade as usual, 12 noon to 10 pm. The order covered the whole district, so Tambaram, Pallavaram, Vandalur, Thirupporur, Chengalpattu town, Thirukkalukundram, Madurantakam and Cheyyur were all closed.
Why were TASMAC shops closed in Chengalpattu?
For the by-election to the Madurantakam (SC) assembly seat, held on 6 October 2026. The District Collector ordered every TASMAC shop and bar in the district shut from 4 to 6 October and on 9 October, the counting day. Tiruppur district had the same closure for the Dharapuram by-election.
Is Tambaram TASMAC closed?
Yes, on the closure days. Tambaram is in Chengalpattu district, so its shops were covered by the order, as were Pallavaram's and Vandalur's. The nearest shops that stayed open were across the Chennai district line in Alandur, Pallikaranai and Sholinganallur.
How much did the closure cost in sales?
On the same three weekdays a week earlier, Chengalpattu's shops sold an estimated 1.38 million bottles for about ₹23 crore. During the closure they sold nothing. About half of that was made up by the stock-up on Saturday 3 October and by shops just across the border; the rest was not bought from TASMAC at all.
Which shops sold more while Chengalpattu was shut?
The ones within walking distance of the district line. The 14 shops in Sholinganallur taluk doubled their usual sales; Kundrathur's three shops in Kancheepuram did too; Alandur's six rose by two thirds. The single biggest gainer was shop #4168 on OMR at Sholinganallur, from about 15,000 bottles to about 33,500 over the three days.
Was the Saturday before the closure really a record?
Yes. On Saturday 3 October, Chengalpattu's shops sold an estimated 730,869 bottles, 61% more than the Saturday before and the most on any day since we began counting in August 2026. Jet Brandy alone went from about 25,000 bottles to about 86,000.
Will the app show these closures?
The Pulse tab marked each closed night as a dry day once the day's counts showed no sales, and the shop pages show the last count. Announced dry days for every district are on the dry-days page and in the app's Dry Days card.
Where do these numbers come from?
From Sarakku's own counts of every TASMAC shelf in the state, read every 30 minutes through the day. Sales are estimates worked out from how stock falls between counts, so they can read low on restock days. Comparisons are against the same weekday a week earlier.
Shut 113 shops for three days and the district line becomes the busiest street in Chennai.
