TASMAC closed shops list 2026: the 717 closures, district by district
On 12 May 2026 the new Tamil Nadu government ordered 717 TASMAC shops closed for standing within 500 metres of a place of worship, a school or college, or a bus stand. It later put out the shop numbers, with no addresses. This page has every one of those numbers by district, linked to the shop's address, and a check against what is on the shelf today.

4,765 less 717 is 4,048, the outlet count reported for TASMAC in late July.
The government's list: where the 717 were
The list groups shop numbers under TASMAC's 38 district offices. Those are not the 38 revenue districts: Chennai has three offices, Coimbatore, Madurai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur two each, and newer districts such as Tenkasi and Chengalpattu sit under an older neighbour.
The Madurai region, ten offices across the south, took 290, two in every five. By office the largest were Thoothukudi (63), Coimbatore North (48), Erode (42), Virudhunagar (42), Madurai South (39) and Tirunelveli (33).
Checked against the shelf
The list gives numbers and nothing else. We keep a page for every shop number, with its address, so the list can be checked. We matched all 717 against TASMAC's shop list and against shelf stock on 3 October 2026.
708 of the 717 numbers are still on TASMAC's shop list, and every one shows an empty shelf. The other 9 are no longer on the shop list at all. One number, 10347 in Tiruchirappalli, showed stock as late as 16 September and none since. If any of the 717 was shifted and reopened, it is not trading under its old number today.
The other 209: no stock, not on the list
TASMAC's shop list carries 4,852 shop numbers. On 3 October, 917 of them had no stock on the shelf. That is 209 more than the 708 from the government's list. We do not know why those 209 are empty, and no source says the government closed them.
177 have shown no stock since our counts began in August. Some will be numbers that were dead before 2026: TASMAC closed 500 shops in June 2023, and its list today has 87 more numbers than the 4,765 shops it had in May.
32 had stock at some point after mid-August and none since. They may have closed, moved or simply run dry.
The same gap shows from the other side. The government counts 4,048 outlets; we find stock in 3,935, 113 fewer. An outlet that exists on paper with nothing on the shelf is in their number and not in ours.
District by district
By revenue district, Chennai has the most empty numbers: 76, of which 51 are on the government's list: 30 from the three Chennai offices, 20 that TASMAC files under Tiruvallur East and one under Kancheepuram North. Coimbatore follows with 73, all but two on the list. Thoothukudi changed most: 65 of its 125 shop numbers have no stock, more than half.
Where our count runs ahead of the government's, the gap is widest in Chennai (25), Pudukkottai (12), and Chengalpattu, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Tiruchirappalli (11 each). In Namakkal, Krishnagiri and Kallakurichi the two agree exactly.

Is there an official list of the 717 closed TASMAC shops?
Yes. In mid-June 2026 the Prohibition and Excise Minister released the 717 shop numbers, grouped under TASMAC's 38 district offices. It has numbers only; TASMAC later declined an RTI request for the addresses. Every number is on this page, and nearly all link to the shop's address.
How many TASMAC shops were closed in 2026?
717. The order came on 12 May 2026 and by 6 June the minister said all were shut. TASMAC had 4,765 shops before; the government's figure afterwards is 4,048.

Each stood within 500 metres of a place of worship (276 shops), an educational institution (186) or a bus stand (255).
Which district had the most TASMAC shops closed?
Thoothukudi, with 63 on the government's list. Coimbatore's two offices had 71 between them, Madurai's two had 52, and Erode and Virudhunagar 42 each.
How many TASMAC shops were closed in Chennai?
The government's list has 31 numbers under Chennai North, Central and South. By address, 51 of those numbers are in Chennai district. On 3 October 2026, 76 of Chennai's 381 shop numbers had no stock.
How many TASMAC shops were closed in Coimbatore?
71 on the government's list: 48 under Coimbatore North and 23 under Coimbatore South. On 3 October 2026, 73 of Coimbatore's 284 shop numbers had no stock.
Will the closed shops reopen somewhere else?
TASMAC declined under RTI to say which shops were relocated. None of the 717 numbers had stock on the shelf on 3 October 2026. Across the state, 3,935 of 4,852 listed numbers did; the government's outlet figure is 4,048.
A closed shop does not tell you where the open one is. Shops near you lists the ones that are trading, live stock shows what they have, TASMAC timings has the hours, and the app puts all of it in your pocket.
