TASMAC full form: what it means, who owns it and how it works
TASMAC is the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited: a company owned by the state government, and the only shop in Tamil Nadu that can legally sell you a bottle. It has held the wholesale trade since 1983 and every retail counter since 29 November 2003. This page is the short version of what it is, how big it is, how it works at the counter, and where it stands in 2026.
What TASMAC stands for
Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation. The full legal name ends in "Limited", because TASMAC is a company and not a government department. In Tamil it is தமிழ்நாடு மாநில வாணிபக் கழகம், and in everyday speech simply டாஸ்மாக்.
Is TASMAC government-owned? Yes, entirely. The state's own retail rules describe it as "the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited", the one body licensed to sell liquor by retail, and it is wholly owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It works under the Home, Prohibition and Excise Department. The Minister for Prohibition and Excise is K. Vignesh, who has spoken for TASMAC in the Assembly since the 2026 election.
From wholesaler to the only shop in the state
| When | What changed |
|---|---|
| 23 May 1983 | TASMAC is incorporated, with M. G. Ramachandran as chief minister, to handle the wholesale liquor trade. |
| Before 2003 | TASMAC supplies; private licensees run the shops and bars. Licences are auctioned, cartels form among the bidders, and the state loses revenue. |
| October 2003 | The Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act, 1937 is amended to make TASMAC the sole retail seller. |
| 29 Nov 2003 | The retail vending rules come into force. TASMAC's first retail licence runs from this date. |
| 2004 | Every private liquor shop has been shut or taken over. |
The 2003 rules are still the frame. They set the minimum age at 21, name the days a shop must stay shut (Thiruvalluvar Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Mahavir Jayanti, Milad-un-Nabi and Vallalar Memorial Day) and let the government or a Collector order more. That is why the dry-day list changes every year.
How big TASMAC is today
TASMAC's shop list carries 4,852 shop numbers across all 38 districts and 360 taluks, 199 of them Elite shops in 29 districts. Not every number is a working counter: on 1 October 2026, 3,940 had stock on the shelf. The government's own figure, reported in July 2026, is 4,048 retail outlets, after it closed 717 shops earlier in the year and promised to move any within 500 metres of a school, hospital, place of worship or bus stop.
Every shop has a number, and the number is what goes on a bill or a complaint: the shop number list has all of them by district, and the shop pages have each address. The price list runs to 1,507 products. About 23,000 people work for TASMAC, down from roughly 36,000 in 2003, by its unions' count.
How TASMAC works at the counter
One price for the whole state. Every bottle has a single MRP, the same in Chennai and Kanniyakumari, ordinary shop or Elite. The full price list has every product and size. From October 2026 each bottle also carries a ₹10 deposit, paid back when you return the empty.
12 noon to 10 pm. Every shop, every district, every trading day. The hours, and why hotel bars run later, are in TASMAC timings.
21 and over. The retail rules bar sale to anyone under 21, and a shop may ask for proof of age.
Closed on dry days. A handful of fixed dates and whatever else the government declares: the full list.
Paying online is not delivery. TASMAC's portal lets you pay for a bottle and collect it at the shop the same day. Nothing is delivered. How online booking works.
Charged more than MRP? Anything above MRP plus the ₹10 deposit is overcharging. Helpline, WhatsApp number and what to photograph: how to complain.
What TASMAC does not tell you at the door is whether your bottle is on the shelf. That is the part we cover: live stock on the site, the nearest shops by district and taluk, and shop-by-shop counts in the app.
TASMAC vs Bevco
Kerala's counterpart is Bevco, the Kerala State Beverages (Manufacturing & Marketing) Corporation. Both are fully state-owned and a year apart in age. The difference is scale.
| TASMAC | Bevco | |
|---|---|---|
| State | Tamil Nadu | Kerala |
| Incorporated | 1983 | 1984 |
| Owner | Government of Tamil Nadu | Government of Kerala |
| Retail outlets | 4,048 | 289, of which 208 are self-service |
| Retail role | The only retailer | Runs "the major portion" of the state's shops |
Is TASMAC being privatised?
It is the open question of 2026, and the record has two halves.
On 6 June 2026 the minister said, on the record, "There is no proposal to privatise TASMAC", while defending the closure of 717 shops. On 29 July, DT Next reported, citing sources in the Prohibition and Excise Department, that the government had decided to hand shops in corporations and municipalities to private operators: about 2,500 shops, bars included, with amendments to the law to be tabled in the Assembly. Deccan Chronicle, the same day, described the plan as under consideration. TASMAC's unions protested on 4 August.
As of 3 October 2026 we have found no report of that amendment being tabled or passed. Every shop on our list is still a TASMAC shop, selling at the same statewide MRP. If the law changes, this page will say so.
